The National Institute of Nursing Research presents a National Science Summit, The Science of Compassion: Future Directions in End-of-Life and Palliative Care, on August 10 - 12, 2011, at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Maryland. The Summit is co-sponsored by the National Institute of Health (NIH) Office of Rare Diseases Research, the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health, the Foundation for the NIH and Pfizer, Inc., and the National Institute on Aging.

The Summit will be a unique opportunity for scientists, health care providers, decision-makers, and members of the public to focus on the important contributions of research in building the foundations of care for all patients and their families facing serious, advanced illnesses. The entire program is free and open to the public.

The Summit will commence on Wednesday evening, August 10, 2011, in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Maryland from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. with a free, public event titled, The Ethics of Science at the End-of-Life: A Town Hall Discussion. With assistance from the NIH Clinical Center, Department of Bioethics, this opening event will bring together leading experts in science, medicine, and bioethics to converse with the public about many of the critical, relevant issues faced in both research and in practice as we move forward in building an evidence-base for compassionate and dignified care for all those at the end-of-life. We know that this Town Hall event will provide a unique opportunity to engage the public, provide awareness and education, and draw attention to the important and timely ethical questions surrounding end-of-life research and practice.

The Summit will then continue at the Hyatt Regency Bethesda on August 11 - 12 with a key note presentation by Dr. Ira Byock, three plenary panel discussions, a variety of break-out sessions on leading edge research, and closing speaker remarks by Dr. J. Randall Curtis. The many presentations during the Summit will feature leading experts across interdisciplinary fields of research who will address a range of issues in both palliative care and end-of-life. A special Thursday night evening reception of “Desserts and Dialogue” will provide the opportunity to view submitted posters and network with colleagues and friends.
